PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Zion Young scored a game-high 20 points, but the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks saw their upset bid against the 12th-ranked Kilgore College Rangers come up short in a 73-62 loss in a Region XIV men's basketball game on Saturday.
The Seahawks, who were down to six players due to injury, cut Kilgore's lead to six points in the second half, but could draw no closer.
"I was very proud of our effort tonight," LSCPA coach Lance Madison said. "We gave it everything we had against one of the top teams in the nation. We just got a little fatigued at the end."
The Seahawks (12-14 overall, 6-12 Region XIV) trailed 39-23 at halftime, but dominated a good portion of the second half to get back into the contest. The Seahawks had 13 turnovers in the first half as the Rangers were able to create points off of turnovers.
"We did a much better job in the second half," Madison said. "We cut down on the turnovers and played some solid defense."
Christian Andrews had 19 points for the Seahawks, while Martins Adonry finished with 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds. J'Mar Franklin matched his season best with five assists.
The Seahawks drained 10 3-pointers on the night, paced by Young, who went 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Seahawks shot 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from downtown.
Kilgore (23-3, 16-2) ran its winning streak to 10 games. Antonio Shannon Jr. led the Rangers with 17 points.
Both teams grabbed 31 rebounds in the contest.
"I was happy with our rebounding tonight," Madison said. "That helped keep us in the game."
The Seahawks have four remaining games in the regular season. LSCPA opens a two-game road swing at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Bossier Parish. The Seahawks are at Navarro College at 4 p.m. Feb. 28.
The final home game is set for 7 p.m. March 4 before LSCPA is at Paris Junior College at 2 p.m. March 6 in the regular-season finale. The Region XIV Tournament is set for the following week in Baytown, Texas.
"We have a tough two games on the road,", Madison said. "We're hoping to get some players back in time for the end of the regular season and the Region XIV Tournament."
